ABIA STATE UNIVERSITY RAPE RALLY

The absolute rape walk took place at Ahmadu Bello way Victoria Island, Lagos Nigeria on October 5, 2011. It was organised by five NGOs namely, Walk against rape, Kudirat Abiola initiative for democracy, Protect alert on violence against women, enough is enough and Delta women. The reason for the rally and walk was the video tape shown on Utube about three weeks ago. The video which was over an hour, showed a young female Abia State university undergraduate student been raped by five men. In the video, the young lady was severely beaten and assulted. The five men took their turn on her and obviously recorded the scene of the rape, blurring their faces so that they cannot be easily identified. All efforts to get the Abia state government and the authority of the Abia state univeristy to produce the culprit has far proved abortive. This actually made some human right activist hit the street of Lagos peacefully to register their protest with meaningful placards. This protest was scheduled to hold in Abuja, but for security reasons it could not. But this walk is taking place in Abia says Esther Ijewere who said she watched the video on Utube in tears. The girl was actually in pains and she was begging for mercy that she didn`t eventually get. Over a million had watched it. She also said that she heard the names of the rapists but could remember only three namely, zaki, Uchenna and Ifeanyi. Esther Ijewere the executive director of Rubies ink and project co-ordinator of walk against rape campaign wants the Abia state government and the Abia state university authority to fish out the culprit. Pictures below shows concerned Nigerian with placards registering their displeasure against rape.
